I am setting up a library of common parts such as screws, washers, nuts, etc. and I would like to know how you have named some of the parts. For example, for a M8 socket head cap screw 50mm long, I am thinking about naming it SHCS_m8x50. However, for ANSI hardware, I'm not sure about the best way to name, for example, a 1/4" diameter 1" long socket head cap screw.

What are some of the naming conventions you have used or are currently using?

Thanks for your help.

When I was a Pro/E CAD Admin our naming conventions were similar to your convention for the metric fasteners. For the English fasteners they went something like;

1_4-20_x_100_shcs for a 1/4-20 x 1.00 socket head cap screw

or

3_4-16_x_075_hhcs for a 3/4-16 x 0.75 hex head cap screw

We started on UNIX so underscores were part of our daily vocabulary.

Hope this helps a bit. Whatever method you choos just be consistent and dont embed any spaces in the part names.
