I'm working on an addition to a school where we have new light gage metal purlins attaching to the old light gage metal purlins at the existing wall. We soon discovered that we need to have an expansion joint at this wall. I have heard that you can get very small sleeves/pipes that fit around the screws attaching the purlins together that will allow for movement. I'm trying to research products that I could call out, but have had no luck yet. Does anyone know some information about this issue? Thanks.

Why not use screws or small bolts in slotted holes?

I was told by doing that, it would create a friction connection without some kind of sleeve.
