How do I control where the black line from the light attaches to the part?

You can't with directional lights. With spotlights, grab the red dot and move it to where you want it.

Hi Jeff,

So what determines where the black line initially attaches to the part? None of the parts I have received have spot lights. Most of my the parts I get look good but the one I got this morning to work on isn't lit correctly. Is there a tutorial on Solidworks lighting available.

If you RMB on the Lights, Cameras and Scene folder, you can select 'Show Lights'. While you can't move where the line is attached, you can move the lights. Beyond that, you can change scenes, turn lights on/off, etc. It all comes down to what your needs are. Like Dan said, check out Rob's site. He's the guru.

Jeff, our company doesn't do anything with Photoworks or any other rendering program.

Is there a way to copy the settings I like in a Solidworks part file and apply it to files I get that have bad lighting?

You can do something like "Save Lights" or "Save Lighting"--something like that. And then you load the lights (or open them) with your new assembly to apply them. But you'll likely have to tweak things for each new assembly, even when using saved lights.

I wonder if it's not the scene that is being used by the originator of the file. I'd check that out. Check out the help files for info on them.
