I often see 230vac/12vac lighting transformers, usually rated at 50va and usually connected to a decorative downlight with a dichroic bulb. They are very popular in shopping malls and where display lighting is required.
In any event, the transformer is required to be a safety isolation type. This is relatively easy to achieve with wire wound transformers. However, many of the new transformers are "electronic" and are also marked as safety isolation. How is this isolation achieved in the latter type?

Hi Lyledunn,

Electronic transformers are simple switchmode power supply, and isolation in this device is achieved by high-frequency transformers, the same type as used in modern electronic equipament (computer, fax, vcr etc).
