Hi,

what is the main purpose? if you install a Lightning Arrester (or Surge Arrester?) with a power transformer 150/20 kV 60 MVA on HV side.
as lightning protection or switching ?

best regards

To protect the transformer windings from lightning induced high voltage surges in the transmission lines by shunting such surges to ground.

IEEE changed the name from "lightning arrester" to "surge arrester" a long time ago. It protects against transient voltage surges, regardless of the source.

Depends on where you live. Some areas have little lightning activity and switching surges would dominate.

Correct answer is both lightning and switching surges.
