Hi friends

Can anyone of u please tell me what will be the class of Insulation of Water filled rewindable submersible motors (Winding is made of water proof insulated copper wire). Normally manufacturers claim it as Y class?

But i have never seen anywhere the temperature ratings for Y class insulation.

I just check two different brands and the motors in the catalog does not have any y in them. What brand motor are you looking at?

Its not an international mark, a brand manufactured & sold in Brazil.

This detail was given in their technical catalog issued to their service centres for providing technical assisstance.

Y type insulation appears to be used in oil filled applications. Could this be an oil filled submersible motor?

This is definitely a technical catalog of water filled motor as this company manufacture only water filled motors.

Anyhow but what is the temperature rating of Y class Insulation.

i m intersted to know

Are you worried about you application or just curious? If you worried about the application please provide the operation conditions and info.

I cant say I have ever seen a water filled submersible motor, I am not doubting they exist but personaly I cant see any reason or practical advantage it may have over oil filled. Y class insulation is as far as I know , although I will stand corrected paper based and used mainly in oil filled and cooled transformers. Are you sure the motor in question is water filled, I suspect it may be oil filled and water cooled, but again I will stand corrected. Makers info would be useful.

I have had submersibles in my shop which were wound with insulated copper wire, similar to hookup wire, which were water cooled. Seems they were Ingersol Rand units.

i m just curious to know about Y class & not worried about application but normally these motors are used with submersible pumps in the deepwells (borewells).

. Motors from 6" to 12" range are water filled & 4" is oil filled.

The advantage of Water filled motors are easily rewindable where as oil filled motors are not as their sealing system is very critical.

I have had class Y insulation described as 90 deg C insulation normally utilized in oil submerged paper insulated windings such as an oil filled transformer. I do not have a reference for it. My transformer foreman in Detroit was my source.

water filled motors are very common in well applications in fact all motors under 40 in the U.S. are water filled. The benifit is that if the top seal in the motor fails the motor does not short out. With a oil filled motor, once the seal fails the motor is toast.

I dont doubt what you say but cant help asking myself what stops the iron parts like the rotor/stator laminations from rusting? Are they canned?

stator & rotor laminations are in direct contact with pre filled water(de-ionised with propylene glycol).Eventhough laminations are coated with epoxy paints to avoid rusting,it not helping much. If need rewinding all the slots to be filed well before inserting insulation papers. Normally reputed manufacturers use CRNO laminations for these kind of motors.
