Link balloon text to specified table grayed out

I have a multi-sheet assembly drawing with an Excel driven BOM on the first sheet. Balloons work fine with the view on the first sheet. I have different configs on subsequent sheets, but when I try to balloon them, I get the item number, not the BOM number. It seems like the "Link balloon text to specified table" is just what I want, but it is grayed out. Is there another method to get the right numbers, or a way to activate the link to specified table option?

I have Office 2010x64, SP3.0. I know this was a problem with 2009, and turning on an add-in fixed the problem, but that add-in is not in 2010.
