Hi all,

I am trying to understand more about the contact properties used in finite element analysis packages. I am using Abaqus and I have been defining different values of friction coefficient between contact surfaces. The values I tend to use is between frictionless and 0.3. However I have never seen any difference in the von Mises, principal or shear stresses? I would have thought these values would have been effected by this especially according to contact theory.

Any input would be much appreciated

Thanks.

You are using Von Mises-Hencky incorrectly, that measure is not influenced by "contact stresses". Try Tresca or Hertz equations.

For the analysis I have been conducting the von Mises stress and Tresca have been almost identical, I thought this was strange but when I looked this up, this is not unusual. I have been using Hertz equations as a theoretical model to check results.

The effect of friction will (mostly) be more obvious when you look at the shear and normal stresses, not vonMises. Take a look at those stresses instead and you will probably see a difference, though the magnitude of the difference will depend on the shapes,forces,...
