Link Dimensions Between Several Parts?

I want to link dimensions between several parts. I have tried to use equations, but the problem with equations is that the dimensions used become locked. If I link a dimension, its only available for that specific part.

I need to be able to modify my assembles quickly without having to go in and edit each part by hand.

Aother method is to reference a common external Design table.
