Hi yall
In NX5 is it possible to link to another file's expression, a “string” expression?

Thanks,
James

Yes, you can link String Expressions using the Interpart Expression function, just as if it were any other type of expression, but unfortunately for you, this support of String expressions were not enabled until NX 6.0.

Hi John
Well then can I use text in a "number" expression?

What I'm try to do is link to a parent file. I only need job specific text info. I'd prefer to use attributes but I don't think I can do that between files. So I'm trying to use expressions instead. Any ideas since I don't expect we're going to up grade in the near future?

BTW I was able to do this inside the same file, that is to say link drawing text to it's own "string" expression.

Thanks,
James

There's no problem reading and writing attribute values with an expression, however the READ expression has to be of type 'String', and if it's a 'String' the Interpart function will not even recognize that it's an expression let alone allow you to link it. As I explained, this was not enabled until NX 6.0 when we added the other Expression types and finished with the application support for these additional data types, including 'String'. The NX 5.0 support of string expressions was only part of the first phase of the project.
