links between parts

Hi all,

I have a question about how catia creates links between parts. For example lets say I create a product and within that product I create two new parts, Part A and Part B and I constrain them with a fix constraint and they both have a common x0 y0 z0. In partA I create a sketch and extrude a block say 1". In part B I create a sketch at the 1" level of part A and constrain the sketch to the perimeter of Part A and extrude a block 2". In part B there now exists an "external reference" geometrical set that contains a surface linked to 1" level of part A.
Lets say I now edit the sketch used to create the block in partA(I make it larger) and I change the extrusion length, Part B sketch moves to the new level of partA and becomes the same size as the perimeter of part A. Eveything updates perfectly as the sketch used to create Part B is linked to Part A. I save and close all files.

I then reopen partA and partB seperately without opening the product. When I then edit the part A sketch and extrusion depth it has no effect on part B. Only when I open the product does the update option become available. Is there some setting I need to change or is this simply the way catia works or better yet, am I approaching this the wrong way? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

External links have to be synchronized. Check to see if the "synchronize" option is available, under Edit -> links.

Be careful with external references in assemblies. You may want to consider designing in context.
