Hi Group Friends !
Greeting of the day !

Could someone please guide me on the Lip type nozzle design as per ASME Div 1 or Div 2. Specifically regarding the diameter limit and thickness.
I know the lip thickness has to be verified for the forging material as well but i have no idea on the dimeter limit of the lip arm which is butt welded with the vessel (i.e category D joint).

Could someone kindly put some light on it.

Thanks in advance.

Regards
Shanamo

Usually a lip width of 19 to 25 mm is enough for carrying out NDE of Lip to Shell butt weld. Refer to Fig UW-16.1 f1 to f4 for guidance.
Since you already aware that lip region should be verified for forging material, I won't speak much on this.
People treat this differently depending on where you live. From my experience, I found that people in Middle East , Indian Subcontinent treat the lip region as a cylinder / head and find the lip thickness with allowable stress value of forging material ( which many times in lower than shell material ).
People from US and European region treat the lip region as a part of reinforcement instead as a part of shell or head. They would increase the lip thickness in proportion to ratio of Allowable stress of forging / Allowable stress of adjoining shell.
However keep in mind that both methods are tried and test thumb rules method. It is assumed that with the lip thickness would pass in FEA if you follow above methods. In reality , the lip region is to be treated as corner joint discontinuity.

1) There is no limit
2) Figure UW-16.1 f1 to f4 are not corner joints. They are BUTT WELDS of Type (1) of Table UW-12
