Can "liquid hammers" occur in gas pipelines?

The combination of all the variables would be so complex and rare, it would be extermly unlikely. We stop flow in gas lines in very short lines less than .5 seconds and there is no hammer effects, the gas is a nearly perfect shock absorber.
