Dear All,

it is generally understood that direct solar radiation of aboveground piping/vessel systems mandates installing TERV to accommodate liquid volumetric expansion as a result of heat up of subcooled liquid at calculatable rate. However, if a piping system is installed under shed (shade) with maximum temperature of 58 C instead of black bulb radiation T of 85 C, would we still consider thermal expansion of liquid is a valid scenario since the subcooled liquid can be initially at a Temperature of 13 C for example and hence still exhibiting thermal expansion as a result of thermal expansion.

In the real world, the question of whether liquid thermal expansion protection is needed is a very easy one to answer. Just ask yourself whether the liquid-full system can be isolated, and whether the fluid temperature can rise while it's isolated. If both of those answers is yes, then the system will be overpressured if there's no form of pressure relief protection.

If the temperature can rise for a blocked-in liquid-full system, it's an academic waste of time to perform calculations to determine whether relief protection is needed.
