gearcutter,

There are some AGMA standards covering gear couplings. AGMA 9009-D02 covers basic terminology and points to more specific references. AGMA 922-A96 covers load classifications and service factors.

Hope that helps.

I use all manner of couplings, including gear couplings.
The ratings for the couplings I get from the manufacturers rather than try to do it myself.

gearcutter,

If you want to take a crack at analyzing the coupling yourself, I'd suggest approaching it just like you would for a crowned involute spline. Your primary concern is likely the contact stress on the external crowned spline teeth.

If you layout your required coupling misalignment angle and engaged lengths, you can establish the necessary flank and tip crown heights. Once you have your required crown heights, Machinery's Handbook gives an equation for tooth surface compressive stresses. Based on these tooth surface compressive stress values and your coupling materials, you should be able to establish a fairly reliable fatigue life.

If the coupling is for high speed or high power, you'll need to consider heat transfer.

Here's a good spline reference:

Good luck.
