as a lab tech i was asked the following question today and was unable to answer!! hopefully one of you guys will point me in the right direction.

what load do i need to apply to a soil sample to achieve a loading rate of 0.46n/mm2 using a 50mm plunger?

i'm sorry but this is all the information i have at hand therefore may not make any sence!

First of all, your loading is not a load rate. A load rate is some force or pressure applied within a certain time.

Your loading is given as a force per unit area (N/mm^2). You will need to know the area of the plunger in order to get the force required.

The diameter of the plunger is 50mm. The area of the plunger would then be 1963.5mm^2. To get the required force in Newtons, multiply 0.46N/mm^2 x 1963.5mm^2 which equals 903.2N.

A more common term in many areas for N/mm^2 would be megaPascals or mPa.
 
thanks Ron, to be honest i had the same answer but just wanted to be sure! it seemed to easy to be true! thanks for your help again.
