Hi,

I have a casting made to ASTM A890 1A, Duplex Stainless. The casting has failed hydro testing, a weld repair has been made. I know Solution annealing is required. The question has been raised to conduct a workshop localised PWHT, heating to above 1100 deg C followed by quenching (buckets of water and wet rags).

I am concerned that potentially more damage could be done as there is a chance of forming embrittled precipitates in the surrounding region. I believe the entire casting should be uniforming heated and quenched.

Am I on the right path?

Even though this alloy is less sensitive than some of the other duplex grades, you are correct.
The entire casting should be re-annealed and quenched.
Make sure that the quench tank is large enough to to assure adequate cooling.
