Is it a mistake to place the strut attachment points on the bents of a column as shown in the image instead of attaching to the beam with the vertical braces?

It seams like attaching to the vertical brace beam would minimize bending on the column but induce torsion in the web of the column. On the other hand, attaching to the column flange induces both a moment and small torsion on the column. This torsion is mitigated by the fully coped beam between the two columns.

I think that it makes a ton of sense the way that you've got it. Clean, direct load path and lots of things adding stability. You've got the same potential for bending in the columns whether you deliver the load to the cross beam or not. And, all other things being equal, it's best to get the loads to their final destination by as direct a route as possible. As you've intimated, the cross beam appears to ameliorate any column torsion regardless. KootK approved.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

I like it to, and a good commentary in the response.

I don't follow the question. we're saying the pic looks good, but you're asking "is the pic a mistake ?"

I take it that the "bent" of the column referred to is the frame ?

Maybe show a pic of your alternative design ?

another day in paradise, or is paradise one day closer ?

Thanks for the thoughtful reply Kootk.

rb1957,

Bent is the term we use for the entire vertical support consisting of the columns that are slightly angled towards the top making an "A" shape and the vertical bracing connecting between the columns.

In this industry, I observe struts getting attached to either the cross beams or the columns, and I was wondering if it was obviously better to attach at one location vs the other. When the struts are attached to the cross beams, the beams are rotated 90 degrees about their longitudinal axis. I'll model up a picture later today if I get time.
