Threads on shafts on some pumps are not fully threaded on position where lock nut engages on pump shaft to contain sleeve or bearing . Kindly see pic in link. What is the reason of keeping flat (unthreaded) portion on pump shaft which lock nut engages with shaft?

I'm not sure I completely understand your question. The recess in the shaft threads is there so the notch in the washer can engage it. The teeth on the outside of the washer get bent over on the nut after it is tightened. That way the nut cannot loosen.

This thread should be posted at Mech.Eng. general discussion forum.. Suggest you to visit SKF website ..

The unthreaded portion is slotted fully so the sleeve can be tightened with locking nut and fully clamped with shaft .. .Notice that the adapter sleeve is tapered to fit bearing interior ring surface .
