Hi all,
Not the best title and if i should be in a different please let me know.
I am wanting to make a motorized box that lowers. The system will be run by a single DC motor that is chain driven to a roller that unwinds cable to lower the box. My question is when i lift the box with the motor it is fine until i switch off power to the motor gravity will take over and unwind the cable. There is not enough gearing for the friction of the motor to hold the load. Is there any common solution to this? I am thinking of a mechanical lock but not sure.

Thanks

Maybe a motor with a built-in brake. Power goes off, brake engages.

Sounds like an electric winch with built-in brake is in order. JC Whitney, Harbor Freight, Northern Tool...

Best to you,

Goober Dave
