Hi folks,
I'm looking a BH curve for A-36 steel (hot rolled). We're making a 'test transformer' out of it with one edge replaceable with other materials. Just for some 'order of magnitude' testing of tungsten/carbides. I'd just like some other data to compare our little test rig to.

For that matter, if anyone has BH data for tungsten/carbide (10%cobalt), that would be nice to see too!

Thanks,
Chris

A-36 steel is a pretty wide specification. The supplier is allowed a wide range on the composition, so you'll get all sorts of magnetic variation from lot to lot. Because of this it's not really practical to get an accurate BH curve for it.

However, if you just need an order of magnitude estimation, you'll be safe enough using 1010-1018 cold rolled steel.

Regarding your request for BH data on tungsten/carbide, I can't help you there. I've never run across that one. Hopefully someone else in this forum can help.

Thanks, MagMike. 1018 data should be good enough.

The carbide is slightly ferromagnetic. I understand that without the Co it would be non-magnetic.

The one piece of A36 I tested had specs at 0.16% C and the curve was similar to 1018. But as stated A-36 can be just about anything they want to melt. And magnetically it could be off quite a bit. I wouldn't bet on it being like 1010 or even 1018 if really mattered.

Hello lgearhart,

That's very interesting data, thanks for the link.

Do you know why the the remanence for material 24-06 is listed as 12,130 Gauss, when it is clear that the BH curve crosses below 10,000?
