looking for input on hillside grading work

I have an opportunity to work as a geologist in a job that involves hillside grading, fault mapping, and field mapping, and a 4X4. Does anyone have any experience with a job like this? Am i going to need autocad, or will regular set of colored pencils do? I have a BS in geology, but i don't want to get into an independant position that's beyond my resources. Thanks for the input.

Can you define the end product? Construction docs or a report to another professional or client? What reviewing agencies are involved? Be careful... is a professional license required for what you are producing?

I looked at your Profile (it's incomplete, by the way. You exceeded the length limit.) You appear to have the technician end covered; what kind of support and on-the-job training will your employer provide? Your employer's expectations?

The fault mapping should be a joint effort with a surveyor. Depending on the project's size, survey crews may be onsite full time, so they can help you with the geologic boundaries as well. I suspect that you will need a set of sharp eyes, good geologic training, colored pencils, eraser(!), and excellent communications skills for this job. Your employer should establish your relationship with the contractor and surveyor for you - through the owner. If it is set up well and all the parties work well together, the experience will be very rewarding. If not, well...

The job isn't actually with my current employer. I was hired on to my current company with expectations of work in geology, and so far it has been mainly inspection so I was exploring my options. The job I mentioned was one I could get with my current credentials, but I was wondering if I was getting over my head with only experience in drilling/slope stability/phase 1 esa.
Great description of work- this makes more sense to me now. The job sounds a lot like geology field camp! lol
