looking for low carbon steel (1002 or 1010)

i'm looking for cold rolled 1002 or 1010 in 3/8" rod. does this even exist? i've been calling around for a few days but no luck. any pointers on who might have this would be greatly appreciated.thanks.

1002 is not a recognized steel grade for wire, rod, and bar applications. Is this supposed to be carbon steel with nominally 0.02% (by mass) C, or is it supposed to be 1020 steel with 0.20% C? 1020 is a very common grade. If you need smaller quantities, then you will need to find a distributor or service center and not a steel mill. Try contacting one of the members of AWPA or Capital Steel:

thanks for the replys. i'm looking for rod with the least amount of carbon possible. if 1002 is not a grade for rod and bar what would be the lowest? thanks for the help.

I dont know the availability in Rod, but in sheet form the DDQIF grades of steel can get down to 99.80%wtFe .. The tolerance on carbon at that low of a level is really not that good though.

SAE J403 is the standard most often referenced in North America for chemical compositions of carbon steels. Grade 1005 is the lowest carbon steel recognized. The C content is specified as 0.06 % (by mass) maximum. ASTM A 510 lists SAE 1005 as one of the available grades.
