I have a question for the forum! We are about to do a new project, and the question has come up, regarding the minimum temperature that A36 structural steel may be used. I have looked all through the AISC manual and found nothing. The only thing I have found was relative to fire protection and elevated temperatures.

The project we are about to start has a design temperature requirement of -20F. Does anyone know of a document or standard that recommends changing from A-36 material to some other materail?

From my review of various AISC documents and FEMA Report 355-B, for low temperature, moderate toughness classification, the minimum CVN impact energy requirement is typically 20 ft-lbs at -20 deg F.

Regarding A36 structural steel, you can require impact testing (Supplementary Requirement S5) with the above impact requirements at -20 deg F for your purchase order. A fine grained, A 36 steel shape should make the stated impact requirements.

Just keep in mind that the Charpy testing temperature is not the same as the service temperature.
