Losing Detail Views

I have an ongoing problem with some detail views in assembly drawings.

When I open a drawing the first time, the model in the detail view is blank, but any annotations remain - if I switch from outlines to hidden lines, the view returns, and I can switch back to outlines and print.

Any thoughts on why this occurs? Is there an easy fix I'm missing?

Hey, no fair, your cheating! You gave the "fix" before the problem. Usually the question is "I opened a drawing and the views are missing. The dimensions and annotations are there, but the model isn't. How do I get the view back?

There are 5 or 6 threads with the above question, but this reply doesn't help you.
