OK, I confess that I am not as comfortable navigating the 2007 edition of NFPA 13. With that said, I need help locating a requirement for the protection of palletized storage of plastics and rubber.

In the 2002 edition, Section 12.2.3.1.5.2 specified that when the clearance between sprinklers and the storage exceeded 20 feet, protection is required so the clearance is limited to 20 feet or less.

When I look in Section 15.1.2, it appears this section was deleted. Was it actually deleted, or was it relocated? If it was relocated, where did it end up landing?

I'm asking because FM still has the requirement and I'm aware of the problems associated with excessive sprinkler clearances.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Stookey:

I believe what you are looking for is found in Chap 12 under general storage requirements:

12.1.3.4* Ceiling Height.
12.1.3.4.1 For ceiling heights that exceed 30 ft (9.14 m),
where the distance between the ceiling height and top of storage exceeds 20 ft (6.1 m), protection shall be provided for the storage height that would result in a 20 ft (6.1 m) distance between the ceiling height and top of storage.
12.1.3.4.2 The requirements of 12.1.3.4 shall not apply to
storage arrangements protected in accordance with Chapter
13, Miscellaneous Storage.
