The original thread is closed (long ago), so this is to thank the guys who replied and update you on the result.
The project was to make a comms system sending data from a transmitter riding within the neck of a bottle as it passed along a filling line. To obtain data on the efficiency of the Bottle sealing equipment.

Although quantities were indeed very low, the small size required meant that an off the shelf solution was impractical.
Battery life wasn't really critical as the unit could be powered off and each pass took only a few seconds.
IR or other beam systems would not work because in some cases the bottles were opaque.

In the end we opted for rfPIC12F675, 380-450(433)MHz ASK. Antenna was part of the board design, and it ran from a 'coin cell', the whole thing was on a board about 20mm x 50mm,
a second round Board with a spiral track was mounted on the end and rested on top of the bottle, this picked up the magnetic field strength of the sealing equipment.

Wow, a nearly 9-year old thread... impressive that the OP came back after all of that time to update us!
