I have qualified a welding procedure on a 4" Sch 40 SA 333 Gr 6 pipe with impact testing at -50°F. Welding was done in Flat position.

My client is telling me that I can use the procedure only in 1G and 2G position. As far I know i can use this procedure for all positions if I have a welder qualified in 6G .

Please can somebody clarify this ..

Yes, your client is correct. Assuming your procedure is qualified with impact testing using the SMAW process, ASME Section IX, QW-253, lists the change of position as a supplementary essential welding variable. For impact testing, the supplementary essential welding variable is treated like an essential welding variable.

This means that if the weld procedure is qualified with impact testing, any change in position must be re-qualified regardless of the welders performance qualification.

I believe that the only change in position not allowed for a qualified WPS with impact testing (supplementary essential variables applying) is a change from any position to welding vertical up due to the typical increase in heat input that occurs in the veritcal position with upwards progression.

Per QW-405.2 "Vertical-uphill progression (e.g., 3G, 5G, or 6G position) qualifies for all positions". For pipe welding requiring impact tests, your procedure is presently not qualified for welding in the 5G or 6G positions with uphill progression.

DEAR ALL
FIRSTLY THIS IS NOT ASME CODE ISSUE BUT IT IS REALATED WELDING QUALITY.
JUST I WANT KNOW ALL OPINION ON THE LOAD TESTING,ONCE WE PLAN TO CARRYOUT LOADTEST,GENERALLY WE CARRIEDOUT MT BEFORE AND AFTER LOAD TEST. IS THERE ANY CODE SAYS IT? IF ANY BODY SEE ANY WHERE IN BLACK AND WHITE,PLEASE ADVISE ME.
