I am looking at structural steel plate and members that can be exposed to -55 F. I was told that Cor-Ten would be a possibility. My understanding is that Cor-ten is roughly equivalent to A588 and A242. When I look at UCS-66 in ASME section VIII I would classify these cor-ten equivalents into curve A. So my understanding is that Cor-Ten would not be sufficient and that I would need to go with 516 and normalize depending on my thickness. Is this correct? I feel like I am missing something because by the same logic A36 would fall into curve A but I know I have seen A36 used for design temperatures of -20F. Any clarification would be wonderful. Thank you. I am a new engineer so I can use all the help I can get.
