LWN Nozzle with Re-Pad

Hello,

Is it considered good/sound engineering practice to design a pressure vessel nozzle utilizing a long weld neck flange and a reinforcing pad? You don't see this combination very often and I am assume there must be a reason.

The reason is that you're paying extra for the LWN fitting specifically so you can eliminate the repad. If you want to use both, no reason it can't be done. Another option is the heavy-barrel fittings available for the same reason as the LWN.
 
LWN w /pad is a detail I absolutely hate. Better to just go to a heavy neck. BUT: Occasionally due to specification requirements* and so forth it is the only design that makes sense overall. Yuk, just hold your nose and do it :)

*Such as nozzles below a certain size be LWN, with applied nozzle loadings, not practical to increase cylinder thickness
