M14 Socket Head Cap Screw

In the Machinery's Handbook, why does it say that a M14 S.H.C.S. is "non-preferred" or "not recommended for use in new designs?" What sort of scientific explaination is there for this? Your input is appreciated. Thanks, Shawn.

Curious question for sure. It is listed as 'not preferred' because of the fact that m14 is not listed as a 'first choice' size in the grand list of 'preferred basic sizes' - ref section K16.6 of the Genium Publishing Drafting Manual. M14 is listed as a 'second choice' however, with M12, M16 being the 'first choice' sizes.

As for not recommended, that's another story. I've found that often an M14 bolt is the best choice in certain applications.

Hello

We would use M14s a lot more than we do where I work, but the manufacturers of the bolts charge more than equivalent length M16's.. The cost of tapped hole manufacture for the quantities we make between M14 and M16 means no difference at all. It works for yuo eventually as the tooling bill gets sliced down that little bit more. Standardising saves money - FACT
