Who can tell me something about machining Stellite (6) by turning opreations.

Sorts of tools (carbides, PKD, CBN)

Machiningconditions, (Cuttingspeeds, feedings, depth of cuts)

Toollife and calculate toollifes?

Thanks in advance.

I am presently turning a 2500 lbs. conical cast steel valve core. It is 37" dia. and 30" long with 10 1.500" thick fins with 3/16" stellite overlay on all surfaces. Tolerences are +- .001" on diameter and +- .003" on lengths RC 60 hardness and 63 finish along OD. I have been turning it at 25 rpm and tried numerous grades and coatings, tool geometry and angles. I have not been able to find an insert that would perform satisfactorly. The CBN and ceramics would cut ok but would not take the impact of the interupted cut. The carbides would wear down in only inches of cutting. This part has to be finish ground anyway so I can finish the job but would be interested in any potential solutions or suggestions.
Thank-You.
