Hi All..

I have a question regarding magnetic bearing isolator for pumps, i hope anyone can help me on this,

1. in what application/what condition that pumps suggested to use magnetic bearing isolator?
2. I have read some project specification said that "pumps with steam-quench of the seal shall have magnetic bearing isolators", my question is, what is relation between steam-quench of seal with magnetic bearing isolators?

Magnetic isolators should provide a more positive seal than standard bearing isolators. This is a good technology to consider for extremely dirty or extremely wet environments. The application with steam quench is also a good idea. The steam quench produces a flow of steam directed toward the bearing housing. This is more likely to result in water contamination of the lube oil. Adding a magnetic seal could help to keep the water from the steam quench out of the bearing housing and out of the oil.

We have not had good luck with application of magnetic isolators in our plant. But, we were applying them to pumps with oil mist lubrication. There are particular requirements in oil mist applications to allow the oil mist to lubricate the magnetic isolator before the pump is started up. If you don not following these requirements, the magnetic isolator may burn up on start-up. This can be handled procedurally.

We have only one set of pumps using magnetic oil seals. It is a standard bath brg housing arrangement in a pretty clean environment. We do not have any oil contamination issues. Occasionally the rotating portion of the magnetic seals will slip on the shaft (go slow) presumably due to friction from magnetic forces overcoming the grab of the oring. Ours are not superb at preventing slow oil leaks.
