Interesting. It's mechanical, so it would seem that the only real possibility is a compass needle in some sort of 3 axis gimbal mount, possibly like the early magnetometers described here: and

Of course I can. I can do anything. I can do absolutely anything. I'm an expert!

Nah, knowing Skogs predilection for ballistic experiments on innocent beverages if that were the case he'd be asking about hedgehogs, mighty mouse, squid, limbo and where to buy kegs of cheap lager.

Yeah - we've got quite a few of them. All are not on the rocks.

Pud, your bottle magnetometer is probably a lot better than the Beauty I was after. But, you know me and Beauty...

And, IR. I read those articles with great interest. I have been both building and using flux gates. They do not at all look like that antique brass piece of art and I had no idea they both do the same thing. I relly regret that I was such a cheapskate. USD 300+ and I would have had it...

Sorry Kenat - I was typing. So I missed your comment and, ah, well, er...

The flux gate magnetometer will be WAY more accurate and sensitive. It would take a fairly large magnetic compass to reliably resolve better than 1/2 degree, but a flux gate, could probably get down to 1/10 degree or better.

Oh, and most of the mechanical devices would probably be quite sensitive to ambient vibrations, so some care would be needed to ensure that you're away from busy streets, people bouncing around, etc. We had a subcontractor that used to do their alignment measurements around 3am in the morning because even a single car driving on the street about 30 ft away could be detected.
