I think it is possible to do what I am trying but I can't seem to find the right combination yet:

I want to make a model of an oil seal but don't have the drawing or the part. I have a screen shot of a typical cross section though. If this were pasted into a paint program and saved as a jpeg or some other format, it could be traced over in Solidworks or Autocad and scaled to the correct size. Then it could be swept to make the 3d part.

Is there a way to do this or am I dreaming?

Thanks

Seems like more work to me. I would sketch it and dimension it as accurately as possible and revolve it. When the real part comes in, measure it and fix the model.
Or call the manufacture of the part and ask for a dwg or CAD part. Some companies will do this for you.

Most if not all seal manufactures will give you X-Section geometry and some even have them in native 3D CAD. I get detailed engineering data from Bal Seal and Variseal. It sounds like a nice exercise but I would rather spend my down time surfing E-bay

Thanks everyone. It worked once I saved the screenshot as a bmp and then inserted it as a picture as Scott suggested. It took a little time to trace the part and clean stray or overlapping lines before the sections would revolve, but I think next time it will be much easier.

Actually I spent more time on the net searching for a part or trying to get something out of the supplier.
