We are looking to install a make-up air unit on an aircraft re-fuelling garage. The area is a Class 1, Division 1, Group D area which basically means that you cannot have any spark producing equipment whatsoever. People are not even allowed to carry lighters or cell phones in this area. All motors and electrical equipment in this area is to be explosion proof.

The initial unit that was specified for this area was a direct fired unit which produces an open flame in the duct. This became a major concern for us and now we are asked to come up with alternative solutions for this problem.

What I am looking for is a type of make up air unit that brings in 100% fresh air from outside with heating capabilities that would operate safely in this environment. The location is Ontario, Canada so we will get some fairly cold temperatures in the winter months. In the summer months, the unit will not run as the users simply open the big garage doors for ventilation.

Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you considered an indirect gas fired heating AHU? otherwise a boiler and heating coils.

Talk to your Venmar or DesChamps rep and get an air to air heat recovery unit with an indirect gas fired heating section. Payback on the heat recovery in the Ontario, Canada, climate will likely be less than 5 years. The project may also have to comply with the Canadian Model National Energy Code for Buildings since Ontario is the only Province to have adopted it (sigh) so whatever you do, make sure the system will meet the prescriptive energy code requirements too.
