Making my simulation converge by increasing the damping coefficient. Is there a better way?

Hi everyone:

I have been running a contact simulation that has had convergence problems. I was getting the error message: Convergence judged unlikely. In order to make my simulation converge, I have been increasing the damping coefficient to a very large number. I have went to Interaction Properties --> Damping --> Damping Coefficient and I assigned a value of 100000 to "force" my simulation to converge.

This works, but I feel that it was a sloppy way to get my simulation to converge. How does this affect the accuracy of my results? Is there a more common and/or better way to achieve convergence?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Additional Detail:
My model is an analytically rigid joint (simply modeled as a cylinder) that is in contact with a deformable leg. Force is inputted onto a reference point on the jigid joint, then the force is transmitted to the leg.
