Hello, I am working on a project that requires me to make an lcd screen placed close to the users eye appear to be far away. I am not totaly clear on how the human eye can tell the difference between a far away object and a near object using only one eye but I must find a way to make the eye focus on the lcd as if it were far away. I thought of placing a long focal lenght lense in front of a short focal length lense but this only made the lcd look smaller and my eye could not focus on it. I am now thinking of using mirrors to reflect the light back and forth in a tube where it would acctualy travel a long distance before it reached my eye but I don't want to be forced to do this since it will be large and heavy. Is there a way I can accomplish my goal using lenses and other small optical components? I would also like to be able to adjust how far away the lcd looks by moving a lense or something. Thanks!

Look at the LD viewfinders in camcorders and cameras for an approach.

I suggest you consult an optical engineer
