Asked this in Mechanical, but wanted a more widespread readership:

Anyone in the US hear of or deal with the Manufacturing Extension Partnership in their state (or any other state)? I am looking into the organization. They are funded by NIST, universities and other state or federal programs. Each state has its own MEP- most with several offices to cover different regions within the state. Their mission is to help local manufacturers to operate more efficiently, utilize LEAN practices, etc... The goal is to increase manufacturing in the state and help stimulate the economy, etc....

Just looking for some opionions or experience with MEP organizations throughout the country.

You can look them up online if needed. I'll be glad to get any feedback even if not experienced with them.

In PA we have a group MRC (Manufacturers Resource Center) that provides experts on different manufacturing areas like: manufacturing processes, MRP/production control, IT, CAD/CAM and other areas. This group is very good in understanding your business and getting you on the right path. They have been around for at least 20 years and have proved their value.

Also in PA we have the Ben Franklin Partnership that will fund small and large industries in new areas of effort. Sometimes I have seen grants go to large companies that were slow in adopting new technology, this seemed to me to miss the point since they were not resource poor. But the process is by application and the pool of funds gets distributed on a basis of job production/retainment and growth of the business. All applications get an equal look, but you must understand their process and apply.

The ones I have found that are variable in their effectiveness are universities. Many fancy themselves as experts in their field but they are behind the times. I ran a business where we had a group consult and their information was no news to any of us who had worked for many years in manufacturing. In other cases I found them to be the best but it depends on the program. As with all schooling - do your homework.

Overall my experience was very positive. I recommend all companies to go out and use these resources. In this environment all avenues must be explored.

HVACctrl,
I have dealt with such organizations in two states. Both have been good but do not expect something for nothing. Those I dealt with were essentially consultants. You need to ask the correct question to get useful answers. They will work hard and have a good range of contacts and resources available.
On the other hand, if there is a private sector entity who can provide the same or better service they will steer the customer to them.

Thanks guys (and/or girls),

I was asking specifically about the MEP in your states or states in which you have worked b/c I am considering working for the MEP in my state.

Just trying to do a little more homework before hand.
