Maragng steel or 300M 1

For the purpose of making torsional shafts which will see only a twisting action. The maraging steels are nice to use because they are low temp heat treat with air cooling where as the 300M requires quenching to harden, which in turn adds a straightening step in the process before finish grinding. Is there a better material than maraging or another way to heat treayt the 300M to minimize the distortion?

These two alloys have among the highest strength to weight ratios of any metal and are ideal for strong shafts. There aren't a lot of different options for heat treating these - I would recommend following the practices detailed in the ASM Handbook Volume 4: Heat Treating available at:
