Hi,
Im doing a piece of coursework on the design of a monopile in a river.
My first question is really simple. I have calculated a berthing load from a ship using BS6349-4. I would have expected the formula to give me a load in KN, however it gives me a KNm moment. I am a bit confused as to how i can apply this moment to my pile design. I have calculated it has 40 knM but cannot get my head around how this can be translated into a force so i can check bending, shear etc.
My second question is regarding water current pressure on a pile. I found a formula in "Design Of Bridge Structures. By T. R. Jagadeesh, M. A. Jayaram" (see link). It gives me a formula for water pressure but mentions that the force is 0 at the base, how exactly does this work with the formula found on page 84 ?
The pile is going in an area of fairly high flow so water pressure is obviously important.
