Is it possible to have this option switched off by default so that I have to select which dims I want, rather than the dims I don't?

If you don't want to use the Marked for Drawings feature then simply don't "mark" the dimensions in the model sketch! From what you are asking though, I think this feature is what you would want to use! Mark the dimensions you want brought in to the drawing & then only insert those.
Dimensions can also be brought in "per feature" if that is what you want. Just highlight a feature from the view required (in the Feature Manager/Drawing Views panel) then Insert > Model items > Dimensions . The dimensions relating to the feature should be the only ones inserted.

Well i havent found a way to turn it off but you can do it with very little pain just by clicking the marked for drawing button in the change box that comes up when you create a dimension.. its the button all the way to right on the bottom of the dialog box. and by default its depressed (on) and all you need do is to make one more click after placing the dim. Click it off and that dim is no longer marked. The button looks just like the Model Items icon.

hope that helps

Sorry Paul, I just realized what you were actually asking. I had not realized that the Mark for drawing button was "on" by default. It does not make sense for it to be that way. Hopefully SW will make an option to toggle the default in a later SP.

Hmmm.... I'm going to have to reverse my stand again. After thinking about it & doing some tests I realized that having the default "On" does make sense.

1) It keeps the Insert Model Items feature working the same way as before. i.e. All dims will be inserted into the drawing view(s).
2) The majority of the dims placed in a model are needed in the drawing ... the way I try to model anyway.

I think I will find it easier to leave all the dims "Marked" until I complete the sketch & then RMB & "Unmark" the few I don't need, en-masse. Just means you do the work in the model rather than the drawing, which should help maintain the design intent if someone else is producing the drawings.

How much do you want for that parachute? I think I have an acquaintance that needs it.............. today has not been kind to me!

Sorry to hear that. [sad]

Does this acquaintance want the 'chute or do you intend to make him use it?

Either way I don't want an arm & a leg for it .... I already have those from the previous owner. [angel]

Barrie,
I fully agree with you on your opinions about dimensioning.

The two departments which I deal with are costing and packaging.
Costings are only interested in the model (not the dims) and Packaging are only interested in the overall size of the part. This is why, when I email a part to be costed, there is no need for detailed dims.

I suppose that's what you get for working for a company based in Kansas.

Thanks for your help.

Paul.

I agree with you BlimeyLimey!

Something like that should be off by default....

One of the OTHER things I wish was changed on the default side of things is when you change a dim on a part/assem that has configs... i wish to God that it would default to "This Configuration" instead of all.. this bites more people in the bum than anything!

I changed my mind on the dimension default .. see my 3rd post ... I think it makes sense to have that defaulted to ON.

Absolutely agree with you on the config default though. I've fallen into that trap too often (and still do).
