I am curious how those who have their own business are marketing themselves right now? Any ideas on how to make new business relationships? What are some worthwhile ways to advertise? Pretty much anything that would fall under this category would be great to learn.

I spend a lot of time here. About half my current client list saw one of my posts they liked and followed the link in my signature.

I've stopped using Yellow Pages and their on line equivalent, I only "advertise" on eng-tips.com.

I agree with zdas04. Eventhough I have not been actively looking for work here in the past, I have found opportunities through my posts. Also try to help expand your professional network in addition to the eng-tips site. I have found it extremely helpful to reconnect with old clients and have found new ones through my network.

How did you find your normal clients? I have a good relationship with an old boss who happens to only want to do survey work and no more grading plans, so we now get their referrals.

But trying to find new people, I can't quite figure out what the best method is. I have been emailing Architects and Developers lately. Just trying to find some new approaches in the worst housing depression this country has faced.

I wouldn't discount forming relationships with other contractors that can offer complimentary services.

Finding small mechanical designers(piping designers)that would be willing to partner with you on jobs could open up some opportunities. We often use a small design company that partners with an electrical firm so that they can bid on the whole scope. We treat them like one company and they work out the financials between them privately

When I started up my business, I attended several of the SBA classes offered by my local community college - great, highly recommended. One of the classes concerned marketing and was taught by a PR firm. One of the best things they said to do, concerning marketing your company, was to have a web site with a recent news page. The purpose of this is due to how search engines work. If a search engine looks at your site, and it is continually growing, you move up the list. They recommended adding a news flash or something about every two months.

Other than our website, we don't do any advertising. All of our work has come from existing relationships, referrals, or people we meet through networking.

Find a couple of local associations or groups where your clients or potential clients are members, attend the meetings, and network, network, network. It takes awhile, but over time you will get to know more people in the industry and more people will get to know you.
