I have a scenario where I am using 6x4x1/2 angle as a deck support anchored to a CMU. I was think an expansion anchor would be best suited for this application. The angle/wall is not heavily loaded supporting 100 PLF.

Attached is my concern, there are certain areas that the anchor is not acceptable (1 3/8'' on each side of the CMU block joint). Is there an easy way to combat this?

One thought that I had was to have slotted holes made in the angle w/ a plate washer, but the slot would have to be 4 1/4'' to accommodate the 1 3/8'' + 3/4'' anchor.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Put your fasteners at multiples of 16". either all will be correct or none... Roll those Dice!

You could punch a second set of holes, at the design spacing, 8" shifted from the original set. Then make it clear in your documents that it's not necessary to install bolts in all the holes.

On an unrelated note, 6x4x1/2 is kind of a monster angle for the application.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

With few exceptions, it is typically advised to space anchors in CMU at masonry intervals of 8", 16", 24", etc...

I specify in my details / notes that, "ANCHOR MUST NOT BE INSTALLED WITHIN 1 1/4" OF VERTICAL CMU HEAD JOINT."

I also have provided a second set or "option" holes in an attempt to avoid either the veritcal head or horizontal bed joints.

Thanks for the advice, I have spaced the anchors at 24'' OC with the masonry dimension in mind. Seems like the best option is to have another set of holes offset to one side 3''.
