I am in California working on the design of a patio cover structure (solid roof) which is being supported by 16" square reinforced CMU columns (mainly for aesthetics). The footings below the columns are to be interconnected with grade beams. The mimimal lateral loads distributed to the columns are done through the non-moment-resistant connections from the wood (or HSS for longer span) beams in embedded column caps. Although the lateral loads will be rather small, it does not seem as if these "cantilever" CMU columns are permitted when I look through Table 12.2-1 of ASCE 7-05. Am I missing something?
