Good day,
I'm working on a project where opening for overhead door needs to be added in the existing CMU wall. Building is from early 70's and I'm not sure if there is any reinforcement present in walls.
From what I've see before, piers supporting the lintel are normally grouted and reinforcement is placed in the edge cores. I wanted to check it by code and I checked pier design as unreinforced column in accordance to CSA s304.1 which ended up working fine: I considered P-delta effect moments together with axial forces and my stresses are within the limits. I'm curious if this is the approach that one would normally use for opening supports.
Also, as a side note, my lintel is double angle for which angle bending behavior was considered. I'm also going to ask contractor to add reinforcement into edge cores and grout this and one adjacent core. One thing I'm not sure is if I should ask them to dowel reinforcement into grade beam and whether it should be extended to the top of the wall. Building is single story shop building. Also, it looks like there is lintel already in place but opening is infilled. In order to avoid searching archives for drawings and having to assume that building was built as per drawings, I decided to reinforce this opening lintel and supports for peace of mind. In case that support piers are already grouted, I will leave them as is without knowing if reinforcement is present there. Technically, it is not required for axial strength. I tried to look for reinforcement requirements around the opening and couldn't find anything in CSA s304.1 - am I just not seeing it or there no such requirement in this code?
Any comments are appreciated. Thank you
