Hi all.

I'm looking for some guidance on detailing the repair of an unreinforced masonry wall. I can't seem to find anything in the MDG or in the Concrete Repair Manuals. A direction to a resource would be appreciated.

Basically I'm looking at replacing a section of 16' high URM in a shop that was damaged by an impact. Loads are nominal. I'm mostly concerned with how to choose the demo line and how to detail the connection between old and new masonry.

TIA

It can be as simple as a good mason reconstructing the damaged part. Are any of the masonry units damaged? Can you source new units, either Imperial or Metric? Have the mortar joints been damaged significantly? Can you tell if there are 'hair line' cracks at the joints? Can the existing wall be re-pointed? What loads? Lots of questions.

Thank you sir. That is what I had told the client. We have a site meeting with the mason later this week so I will see how much guidance he needs. I hadn't considered repointing for hairline mortar cracks so that may allow me to reduce the extent of replacement.

I was just surprised that I was unable to find technical literature on masonry repair comparable to the resources for concrete and wanted to poll the audience.

Mostly done by good masons... and doesn't lend itself to a quantified solution.
