i've got a condition where the edge of my stud wall is 7" from my masonry veneer. I've never designed or even looked at the load a 3/16" diameter masonry tie will develop, I've just always speced it because it was standard at the company I worked for. Typically the veneer is alot closer than 7" though. Does anyone know if they make ties that long and what their capacity is?

Check out Heckmann or Dur-o-wall on the internet - they may have some info on long ties.

Both companies (that JAE mentioned) can give you load info. and calcs. for ties at various lengths.

Some other important considerations are:

ACI 530-99 does not allow the distance between the back of the veneer and the backing to exceed 4 1/2" per 6.2.2.7.4 and 6.2.2.8.2.

Make sure that whoever is writing your masonry spec is not allowing the use of ties with "drips". These can carry very little compressive load because of the bend.

Maybe you should think about adding a second stud wall and using normal ties for a 3" cavity.
