For my surveying class I have been given the following exercise on mass haul:

Chainage (m) Volume(m^3)
0 0
200 -13800
400 -5000
600 +2000
800 +16800
1000 +12000
1200 +5000
1400 +1200
1600 +1000
1800 -3000
2000 -5600
2200 -9000
2400 -11000
2600 -8000

Bulking factor = 1.1

I understand that I need to calculate the cumulative volume and use this to draw the mass haul diagram. I am unsure which values to apply the bulking factor of 1.1 to.
Would the bulking factor only be used to correct the volumes of cut soil or would it be used for all of the volumes?

Thanks for any help

loose volume = bank volume x bulking factor (or sometime called swell factor)
so if you excavate 10 bank yards of material, you will haul 11 loose yards. and then when you place and compact the material it will shrink and you will have 9 yards in the embankment

So does that mean that I should divide the fill volumes by 1.1 and multiply the cut volumes by 1.1?

no, its actually a bit more complicated. it depends on the in-situ density, the loose density and the maximum density once compacted. You will usually have a bulking / swell factor that equals the amount it bulks up when you excavate it and it is very loose. This will give you a volume that gets hauled. once you place it and compact it in the embankment, than you need to determine how much it shrinks. This depends on the final density of the fill

I was looking for my old US Corps of Engineer's reference, but they had a basic formula of 1.0 BCY to 1.2 LCY to 0.9 CCY where BankCY to LooseCY = Swell and LooseCY to BankCY = Shrink. Obviously adjust for your real soils. Slide 7 of this PowerPoint is essentially it:
