mass scaling? mass always gets larger?

Hi,

I am using variable mass scaling, "below min" option in my explicit dynamic simulation. As I observed from the .sta file, the percentage change of the mass is always increasing. My understanding is that after every, say 100 increments, abaqus computes the mass scaling for some of the elements, so that the stable time increment is ensured not below a certain level. My question is, if some of the elements have already been mass-scaled due to element distortion in previous increments, do they go back to normal mass if the element is now not as distorted as before when it was mass scaled? If so, it's not necessarily true that mass of the entire system gets bigger and bigger, right?

Thanks, and please let me know if I could better explain any of the above.
